Heartburn has been reported in patients treated for stomach ulcers. Since turmeric is sometimes used in treating heartburn or ulcers, caution may be necessary in some patients. Also reported nausea and diarrhea.

Based on animal studies and laboratory, turmeric may increase the risk of bleeding. Caution is advised in patients with bleeding disorders or taking drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding. You may need to adjust the dosage. Turmeric should be discontinued before elective surgery.

Limited animal studies show that a component of turmeric, curcumin, can enhance liver function tests. However, a human study reports that turmeric has no effect on these tests. Turmeric or curcumin can cause gallbladder contraction and may not be advised for patients with gallstones. In theory, turmeric may weaken the immune system and should be used with caution in patients with immune system deficiencies.

Turmeric should be used cautiously in people with diabetes or hypoglycemia or people taking drugs or supplements that lower blood sugar.
