The study ‘Supplementation with Multiple Micronutrients Intervention Trial’, SUMMIT, was performed with 31 290 pregnant women of which 50% were given iron and folic acid and 50% also received a multivitamin.
The daily dose of iron administered was 30 mg and 400 micrograms (mg) to folic acid. Multivitamin supplementation including vitamin A, C, D, E, B1, B2, B6 and B12, niacin, zinc, copper, selenium and iodine. The intake of these supplements was daily during pregnancy and continued until 90 days after delivery.
Multivitamins Study results indicate that children of mothers who took the supplement had a 18% reduction in early mortality (that which occurs in the first 90 days of life) compared with children of mothers who took iron only and folic acid.
The reduction in infant mortality was observed, especially after the first five days of life and was more pronounced among 29-90 days after birth. The effect of supplementation in women with poor nutrition and anemia was higher, reducing child mortality by 25% and 38% respectively in the groups treated with iron and folate.
The treatment is also associated with a reduction in the rate of babies born with low birth weight. In particular, women treated were 14% less likely than the control group to have a baby with low birthweight.
Risk reduction was also much higher in women with anemia (33%). According to the authors, the effects of vitamin supplements may depend on the deficiency of these nutrients and involve several mechanisms.
