Other Causes of the Emergence of Constipation

  • Constipation may also result from a more complex disease or accompany it (the syndrome of irritable bowel, etc.). There may be bowel obstruction, diverticulitis, an organic lesion of the colon or Pericolic region, abnormal metabolism (hypercalcemia, hypokalemia), or endocrine problems (hypothyroidism) or neurological ( diabetic neuropathy, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord disease).
  • Many drugs can also cause constipation, which, paradoxically, laxatives themselves when taken for long periods, anxiolytics, antidepressants, morphine, codeine and other opiates, some antispasmodic (anti cholinergic) , anti-inflamatories, muscle relaxants, anti hypertensives, diuretics, antacids containing aluminum, etc. Some iron supplements may also cause constipation, but there are not producing this effect.
  • Finally, constipation can result from allergies or food intolerance, including lactose cow’s milk, a situation which is less rare than people think young children are chronically constipated
