The absence of folic acid increases the possibility of a neural tube defect, a developmental defect of the spinal cord and these are;

*Spina bifida is a condition through which the spinal cord is exposed, if the vertebrae (bones of the spine) around the spinal cord do not close properly during the first 28 days after fertilization, the cord or bulk of cerebrospinal fluid that passes through them is exposed, usually in the lumbar region.

*Anencephaly, a condition that serious underdevelopment of the brain.

About half of pregnancies are unplanned, so the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S., has taken steps to enhance certain foods so that all women of childbearing age receive a daily dose of folic acid.

The following foods can help you get the recommended amount of folic acid

*Green leafy vegetables, such as a large spinach salad
*Citrus fruits, like orange juice
*Beans
*Breads
*Cereals
*Rice
*Pasta

A daily vitamin with folic acid may be suggested by your doctor, because the foods mentioned above do not contain enough folic acid to meet daily needs.

Women who are at greatest risk are those who have had a previous pregnancy that involved a neural defect and women who are not eating a balanced diet that includes folic acid are too.

The best way to prevent neural tube defects is to take the recommended dose of 400 micrograms of folic acid per day for a month before conception and during the first three months of pregnancy.

Multivitamins including folic acid should be used only as a supplement under the care of your health care provider.
