A slower growth of the population can help countries to cut nearly 30 percent the emissions of gases contributing to global warming, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
A reduction of gas emissions of this magnitude would be necessary, according to several scientists, to prevent an average increase of 2 degrees Celsius in global temperature in 2050.
“The size and characteristics of the population can influence climate change,” said the study led by Brian O’Neill, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR, for its acronym in English).
Changes in population dynamics may “substantially affect” future greenhouse gas emissions, the study added.
O’Neill and a team of U.S. and Australian researchers used a model of nine regions of the global economy to determine how demographic factors affect climate change.
The scientists found that urbanization could increase by 25 percent greenhouse gas emissions in some developing countries.
However, the researchers said, however, industrialized countries could register a decline of about 20 percent as a result of aging and much slower growth of their populations.
“If it slows the growth of the population, that alone will not solve the climate problem, but can make a contribution, especially in the long term,” said O’Neill. Continue reading
